A Year in the life of numberfive

You know how it goes.... you pop down the South Coast for a few days holiday, fall in love and return home having bought a beach house!

Well, that's pretty much our story; we booked a friend's place in Callala Beach for the 2008 Christmas/New Year period and within a couple of days knew that this was an area we wanted to spend a lot more time. The kids were having a ball in the water, safe from the bigger waves found at nearby ocean beaches. Our blue heeler was having the time of his life trying to eat the waves and running wild on the dog-friendly mostly off-leash beach.

The air was sweet, the water was crystal clear and the stresses of a busy year were draining away.

And as almost every other Sydney couple does at a time like this, we had the famous "you know what, we should buy somewhere down here" conversation!

And then fate took a hand; a casual afternoon walk when we decided to take a left turn when it was quicker to take a right brought us slap-bang in front of 5, Lennox Road.

Honestly, I don't think either of us had a shadow of doubt that this was to be our new property. As all sensible people do, we did our research and checked out some other places, but nothing else came close to giving us that same feeling. Here was our humble beach shack.....

When we talked to our friend and to other locals, it became pretty clear that the house was quite well known. Many times, when we told people that we liked a house on Lennox Road, they'd reply "oh, do you mean Number Five"?

We're not quite sure how 'numberfive' (as we began to call it) achieved its local prominence; maybe it's because - as you'll discover for yourself if you amble around the neighbourhood - there really aren't many traditional weatherboard beach shacks left. Maybe it's because it had fallen into such a state of disrepair that locals began to notice it. Our theory is that it was just so terribly - er, BROWN!

Undaunted by the size of the project, we bought the house a few weeks later. Since taking possession in April 2009, some excellent work by local builders and tradespeople (and our own humble contribution with a paintbrush!) has brought our vision to a reality that we're delighted to be able to invite you to share with your friends and family.

numberfive, has been transformed from a dilapidated shack into a modern, stylish and comfortable home.

The old second bedroom was knocked out to create a much larger, open plan living, dining and kitchen area; two new bedrooms were created by enclosing the side car port.

But because a beach holiday is all about being outside, we've built a huge 40sqm covered deck to the rear, furnished with a BBQ, outdoor shower, dining area and a lounge setting that comfortably seats ten.

The kitchen is brand new and the bathroom has been completely updated. While the garden is still recovering slightly from the construction work, we've planted over 200 native plants, shrubs and fruit trees so that in the years to come both the front and rear gardens will develop a natural and native ambience of their own.

As our contribution to a greener planet, we have installed a solar heat pump hot water system. In addition a 'greywater' system means that the washing machine and toilet run from rainwater supplies when available.

And all of this within ear-shot of stunning Callala Beach, less than 2 minutes away.
