Callala Beach and the Local Area

General

Callala Beach is a small village on the northern side of Jervis Bay with a total permanent population of around 700. This swells to around three times as many when the many holiday cottages are occupied during peak season.

Shopping

There is a local Store which has the only Post Office and only petrol in the area and which also provides newspapers, coffee and sandwiches.

An Italian restaurant and a Fish and Chip shop complete the mini shopping centre on the corner of Parkes Crescent and Quay Road.

Callala Beach is separated from the larger village of Callala Bay by Callala Creek which is crossed by a new footbridge opened in 2005. Callala Bay has a larger shopping centre including a number of real estate agents, butchers, baker, BBQ chicken, hardware, supermarket, newsagent, hairdresser, video store, doctor, pharmacy and a bottle shop. Callala Bay also has the area’s Public School, two Churches and a concrete boat ramp.

Public Toilets and Showers

Public toilets and showers are available at the beach end of both Callala Beach Road and Centre Street .

Pubs and Clubs

The Callala RSL Country Club provides the usual licensed club facilities, including the Miami Bistro Restaurant, a bowling green and a nine hole golf course. The club is the hub of the local community and puts on a good variety of entertainment all year around. There are nice pubs in Culburra, Greenwell Point and in Huskisson.

Restaurants

For finer dining than the local pub/club scene, Huskisson and Berry are good options, although Nowra has some good restaurants too (see our Useful Links page). We particularly recommend The Butter Factory in Pyree for an excellent dinner or Sunday lunch.

Sports

As mentioned above, visitors are welcome to play bowls and golf at the club. Tennis courts are located next to the Community Centre in Centre Street and can be booked at the local store. There are parks dotted around the suburb and a skateboard ramp opposite the Callala Bay shopping centre.

Dogs

One of the big pluses of Callala Beach is that dogs are allowed off-leash before 8.00am each morning and after 4.00pm each afternoon. In peak season we advise you to observe these restrictions. In quieter times of the year, the beach is often deserted and no-one seems to mind dogs being off-leash at any time.

There are garbage bins for dog waste at many of the entrances to the beach, and council provided poo-bags can usually be found at the entrance point next to the Community Centre in Centre Street.
