Alternative Routes

From Sydney and Wollongong

For most people the simplest way is to travel along the Princes Highway. From Sydney, follow signs to Wollongong, then Kiama, Berry and Nowra.

After passing through Nowra on the Princes Highway, you will then come to South Nowra which is made up of numerous home improvement suppliers on both sides of the road, especially a large Bunnings Warehouse on the right hand side.

Carry on through South Nowra and take the first major left turn at Forest Road. This is about 3.5km past Bunnings and is sign-posted towards Currarong.

Travel along Forest Road for about 11.5km and then turn right into Callala Beach Road.

Travel another 2-3km, slowing down as you pass the Callala Beach RSL on your right. Lennox Road is the 4th turn on the left, just past the 50kph speed limit sign.

Alternatives From Sydney

Kiama to Nowra alternative (Recommended)

During peak periods, the Princes Highway can be slow in places, especially in and around Berry. As a result, we would recommend you consider the following route along the Scenic Drive which runs from Gerringong to Nowra, as follows.

Travel on the Princes Highway as above until you have passed through Kiama, with the Beach and Bombo railway station on your left. About 3km further, you will negotiate a section of big bends before going down quite steep hill. At the bottom of the hill, turn left towards Gerringong following the brown signs displaying the logo below:
Carry on along the scenic drive for around 35Km, going through Gerringong, Gerroa, Seven Mile Beach and past the Coolangatta winery. Just follow the brown signs.

The scenic drive takes you right through to Bomaderry (Nowra), where you should turn left when you rejoin the Princes Highway just by the Nowra bridge and then follow the remainder of the directions above.

Nowra to Callala Beach (a good day time option)

The route suggested by Google Maps on our Directions page isn't any quicker than staying on the Princes Highway and is a little more complicated.

That said, it's a very pretty drive through the Australian countryside, with dairy farms on both sides of the road and plenty to look at. If you're unfamiliar with the area and arriving at night, we'd suggest you stick to the top option above. If not, then try this:

Travel on the Princes Highway into Nowra crossing over the road bridge at the start/finish of the scenic drive. Travel a few more Kms, then take a major left turn at the traffic lights at Kalander Street.

Travel another approx 7km then turn right into Pyree Lane (look for red hut) towards Culburra and Callala.

After another 5km turn right at Coonamia Road, sign-posted to Callala Bay and Callala Beach.

At the end of that road (about 4.5Km) turn right into Forest Road

After another 1km, turn left into Callala Beach Road, and then travel into town as detailed above.

From the South (Bateman's Bay, Mollymook etc)

Take the Princes Highway towards Nowra.

About 7km before Nowra, turn right into Forest Road towards Currarong.

Travel along Forest Road for about 11.5km and then turn right into Callala Beach Road.

Travel another 2-3km, slowing down as you pass the Callala Beach RSL on your right. Lennox Road is the 4th turn on the left, just past the 50kph speed limit sign.

From Canberra

There appear to be two main routes from Canberra being via Bateman's Bay and via Moss Vale.

Canberra Via Moss Vale

Take the Federal Highway/Hume Highway through Goulburn and then branch off right on the Illawarra Highway to Moss Vale.

Then take Nowra Road (which becomes Moss Vale Road) until you reach the Princes Highway just outside Nowra (there's a McDonald's at the roundabout where the roads intersect).

Stay on the Princes Highway through Nowra, and then follow one of the routes described above

Canberra via Bateman's Bay

Take Route 52 (Constitution Avenue and Kings Highway) through Queanbeyan and Braidwood to Bateman's Bay.

Turn left onto the Princes Highway and travel about 125Km through Ulladulla and Mollymook towards Nowra
